Clare Watts is a passionate certified trainer and assessor at Yarraville Community Centre (YCC) who believes that empathy is the key to effective teaching. She has been tutoring CHC30221 Cert III in School Based Education Support for seven years and more recently at YCC. Clare’s key objective is to give her students skills in tolerance and understanding of others to allow them to be empathetic and to able to relate to people of varied ages, positions and cultural backgrounds. “Part of our formal education should be training in empathy. Imagine how different the world would be,” she says.
Clare’s students were surprised to learn such personal skills during their studies however, they praise her for teaching them the skills needed to be able to respond to students’ emotional, social, academic needs, and consideration of their interests.
Education Support Workers and Teachers’ Aides are currently in high demand. Australia is facing an “unprecedented” teacher shortage. Since Clare’s time working at YCC, 70% of her students have gone on to find jobs starting that same week they complete their studies. With excellent job security and a plenitude of vacancies in this profession makes now a great time to consider teaching as a career.
